I wanted to take the opportunity to mention my latest endeavor on the web. Chaos to Beauty is a small collective of designers and creatives started in part by a close friend of mine. They were nice enough to invite me to become part of the team.

Here it is – my working list for the year. I didn’t have a hard time picking out the better albums I listened to this year. I did, however, have some trouble resigning myself to a list of mainstream artists. (If that’s not a candid confession of a withering music snob, I don’t know what is.)

Oh, and it’s no mistake that Moby is on the top of the list. Wait For Me was an instant classic. Good to have you back, Mobes.

I’ve always been somewhat of a zealot for old things. Medium format cameras, analog audio & recording, old bicycles, laughably obscure thrift shop vinyl, and the like. When I was growing up, my Dad had a really neat vintage receiver with big, silver, heavy, buttery knobs and wood paneling.

I just bought one of my own. Time to play.

I’ve found a lot of inspiration lately in looking at the where people choose to work; namely all you freelance folk. I will be posting a series of images of places I enjoy working (in the case of this photo, playing) when I’m out of the office.

This is Linnaea’s Cafe, my go-to place for a quiet, soothing environment in San Luis Obispo.

After A Long Hiatus

Hello, and welcome to my newest web endeavor. It has taken quite some time to finalize this new incarnation of my portfolio, and in retrospect I’ve noticed that my approach to designing for myself is embarrassingly unsystematic. Without a single predisposed idea or vision for the end result, I will begin a design. And after suffering through enough disappointing end results I’ve begun to rethink a few of my methods.

Redesigning a freelance website is an exercise in masochism.

Another thing I noticed is that I am my own worst critic. No doubt something that every creative struggles with. Lea Alcantara put it wonderfully when she said: “Redesigning a freelance website is an exercise in masochism. There are no colleagues or an umbrella corporation to share the pain: It’s just you.” I’ve found that to be completely true, and my affinity for perfectionism is often a burden when trying to get things done. Although, this is much less a freelance website as it is a personal exploration in design and blogging (which would explain why it nevers stays the same for long).

That said, I’m hoping to do a fair amount of writing now that I have this online—and seeing as how I have this momentary interest in structure and possibly in developing some sort of a personal brand, I project that future topics on this blog will consist of some design commentary, projects I’m working on (both photo and design), some typical coffee-induced late night ramblings, and of course, the obligatory political rant.
